# Two-factor sign-in

> Ask for a code from an authenticator app after your password, with ten backup codes for when you do not have your phone.

Two-factor sign-in asks for a six-digit code from an authenticator app (such as Google Authenticator, 1Password or Authy) after your password. It is optional, and each person turns it on for their own account. An owner cannot yet require it of the team.

## Turn it on

    Go to **Settings → Your sign-in**. Under **Two-factor sign-in**, choose **Turn on** and enter **Your password**.

  <Step title="Scan the code">
    Scan the QR code with your authenticator app. If you cannot scan it, type the key shown under **Cannot scan? Enter this key instead**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm">
    Enter the **Six-digit code** the app shows and choose **Turn on**. Two-factor sign-in is not on until this code is accepted.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save your backup codes">
    You are shown 10 backup codes. Each signs you in once if you lose your phone. Save them somewhere safe now: they are not shown again. Choose **I have saved them**.

## Signing in

After your password, enter the six-digit code from your app.

* **I do not have my phone: use a backup code** lets you enter one of your backup codes instead. Each works once.
* **Trust this browser for 30 days** skips the code on that browser for a month. Only use it on a computer that is yours.

After five wrong codes, the account is locked for 15 minutes.

## New backup codes

Choose **New backup codes** and enter your password. You get 10 new codes, and every earlier code stops working.

## Turn it off

Choose **Turn off** and enter your password. Signing in then asks for your password only.
